Graphic Design

Graphic design has arguably been a part of human life since we first learned to communicate. In its simplest meaning, graphic design is the communication of a meaning or message through a medium to a target audience, which can take the form of things such as a poem, an advertisement, a logo, or even a technical diagram. In modern times, it has come to mean something almost exclusively visual, fitting in perfectly with the fact that humans use their vision above all other senses. It has come to appeal directly to our physicality as much as our sensibilities.

The process of graphic design is both creative and productive, as it focuses on the creation and design of a particular communication, and also the means by which it is physically manifested. Graphic designers themselves often work on both of these aspects; although in recent years some have come to focus on one or the other factor, mainly because there is money to be made in specialising in a certain aspect of graphic design, and the workload is less stressful and hectic.

The term graphic design has only been around for a short amount of time considering how long humans have been practising it, though it could be said that our perception and meaning of graphic design has changed considerably over the course of time. The growth of graphic design as we know it today has arguably grown in tandem with the rise of consumerism, as much of the graphic design implemented today is from an advertising standpoint.
