One of the most powerful communicative tools in our modern age, social networking has progressed from an obscure type of communication platform to one of the most widely used types of website on the internet at the moment. Social networks have enabled even the shyest and quietest of people to voice their opinions via a medium that means they can remain anonymous, which if you are like these people is surely a huge bonus. A social network service is basically individual-centred in comparison to a similar tool called an online community which has group-centred services: the two are fundamentally similar but work in slightly, but no less importantly, different ways. Despite this, online communities are often considered to be a social network service as they can be used in the same way, though doing it exactly can be challenging.

Despite all the benefits that social networking can bring, there are also things to watch out for. Privacy is one of the biggest issues, as the ease of information input and pressure to act like your peers may mean that you give out more information about yourself than you may have bargained for. This is especially pertinent in the case of personal information. Just because you are able to input personal information about yourself, this does not mean that you necessarily should. Privacy settings are equally an important issue and relates directly to personal information, as you may want some people to see some personal information and others not.
